The Cobra Fiasco Over
If you haven't heard, a few days ago, a cobra at the Bronx Zoo went missing. I must admit it was fun while it lasted. Fun, you ask? The twitter account for the cobra has been fairly entertaining to keep track of. She has even been featured playing keyboard on Conan. I went out to find a link to the story to blog about and found that just a bit ago, she was found and is safe. Fortunately no one was hurt and all is well.

March Fail Compilation
Another great fail compilation. Many of these, I'm sure, seem like good ideas at the time. Also, this could be an entire America's Funniest Home videos, wrapped up into a nice little 7 minute-ish package.

Centaur Your Text.
Every day we read and type long boring emails. Rarely ever are they very much fun. What could make them better, you ask? Centaur your text. That's right, not center, but centaur. It could make things a bit more difficult to read, but, hey it's in the shape of a centaur and that makes it 100 times more fun. To be honest, I've just typed a long drawn out bunch of text in hopes that it translates into at least a mediocre Centaur. I'm not sure quite how much you must type before the centaur takes shape, but it's quite a bit, so make sure you have enough before attempting. So, for your next email, type up the text, go to textaligncentaur.com (great single purpose site btw), centaur your text and send it to your coworkers. I'm sure your boss and executives will love you for it. If they get bored reading your long drawn out email, (which you had to type a lot into in order to get it to centaur properly), they can print your email, draw eyes and a face on it and hang it on their fridge. Sorry for the rambling, but I had to type way too much to get a centaur. Also, I now notice that it has rid itself of my punctuation, so excuse what appears to be run on sentences.
Addition: So, my centaur didn't post correctly, so I'm taking a screenshot instead. If you click on the screenshot you can read this blog entry the way I meant for you to.
Band Plays Rage Against the Machine
I was in a school band of some sort for 12+ years and I'm not afraid to admit I was a band geek. When I see something like this (a group of band members having a great time), it makes me long for the days of my trombone/baritone playing.

Duck Hunt in Real life
The duck hunt game was fairly frustrating. It seemed that the zapper hinged somewhere between, way too effecting and doing absolutely nothing. Here is a great video and article about Duck Hunt in real life. Nerd Alert: If you've played a lot of NES games, you'll notice Scrooge McDuck from the Ducktales game pop up for a brief second on the screen.

Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger - A Capella
YouTube is filled with videos like this, but they don't really get old. I found this one particularly catching.
The Zangief Kid Saga
Bullying is a huge problem in every school I can think of. There has been a story/video circling around online of the "Zangief kid" (named after a character from Street Fighter 2) who stood up epically. Casey Haynes (his real name) has become somewhat of an Internet hero to all us geeks out there who are tired of seeing kids bullied. Here is an interview with the kid.
He seems like quite a good kid, and I'm glad he stood up. Unfortunately I'd say most people out there can't really stand up to bullying without facing severe injury and further shame to the entire school. There is an "It gets better" movement out there to tell kids in such situations to hang in there (it actually does get better, someday, you'll be the guy deciding if that dude who bullied you gets a job or not).
I will admit, I don't know the whole story as to what happened in the whole story of the Zangief kid, because I wasn't there and we just saw a few seconds of the video. Both kids were suspended for violating a zero tolerance rule of fighting (which is a little absurd if what we saw is actually what happened). So, I don't seem one sided, here is another interview with the bully. In my opinion the bully seems like a punk who is trying to save face.

Lack of Looting
Earlier this evening I came across this CNN article about the lack of looting in Japan in the tsunami/earthquake aftermath. This shows what kind of culture they have, based on honor and respect. In really bad times, good traits of a culture/area will often rise to the surface. This is an example of such great characteristic. The comments from the readers of this article are pretty great.

Five Stages of Debugging

Some of my job involves PHP programming. I don't undertake huge projects very often, but occasionally one will creep up. To be honest, I don't feel like I'm a very good programmer, but I get the job done and in the end that's what matters. Here is a great article about the Five Stages of Debugging that I found humorous and accurate. I think I just live in stage one most of the time.... it's not a bug it's a feature!

What Happens in a Nuclear Meltdown
What happened over the weekend is an unfortunate event with unimaginable devastation. On top of the initial woes there is some worry about a possible nuclear meltdown. I find nuclear technology fascinating, and saw an article this morning talking about what happens in a nuclear meltdown. It has a great slide show talking a little about the way the effected Japanese plant works.
While we're on the subject, the people over there do need help, this is going to be years of clean up and aid and decades of rebuilding. If you can find someplace like the Red Cross or Samaritan's Purse, or whatever charity you trust will help out, to donate to if you can afford it.

$5 Million Ink Spill

So, the article I read from Reddit said was labeled "$7.8 Trillion ink" spill referring to this article about a Boston Interstate being closed due to ink spilling, but I did some figures on my own to get a different number.
Based on the graph to the right, ink is $0.70 per ml.
One liter of water weight about 1 kg and I'm assuming ink weighs approximately as much as water (give or take). The article says that the truck spilled 16,000 lbs of ink cartridges which is approximately 7257.48 kg. With decimals extrapolated from the previous calculation, that's 7,257,478 ml. Multiply that by the original $0.70 ml and that's $5,080,234.60. I know maybe weights vary and considering some of the weight was plastic containers of the cartridges, the numbers are probably off some (and inflation). I conclude that ink is ridiculously expensive.

To be honest, I feel kind of bad for Charlie Sheen for winning so much, but I guess he brings it on himself. I loved this parody; he's a really funny man.

She Don't like Firefly
Relationships are ridiculously complicated, this is definitely a deal-breaker though. There's an article here talking more about this video, but the author lost all credibility to me when he said "I mean, dumping someone that awesome simply over a TV show seems like something only a soulless member of the Alliance would do." I don't think that guy gets it either.... you can disagree over TV shows, but you have to draw a line somewhere.

Letter from PC Fixers
Working in the IT is like many other jobs, it's easy to get burned out and become cynical about your end users (*cough*, or relatives). Here is an article where a guy makes "A letter on behalf of the world’s PC fixers". We've all been in this guy's situation, with the trouble some users, and could have written something like this on your own.

Cadbury Cad-apult

If you have ever had the desire to shoot a giant Cadbury egg at someone or some place, here is a site for such a thing. With this being Ash Wednesday (the start of the Easter Season), what a great way to "launch" into Easter. It's sure to give you a good 30 seconds of entertainment.
*If someone recognizes the above place and thinks I hold something against it because I virtually egged it, they're probably wrong, I would've posted my house being egged, but that's kinda weird. We'll call it an affectionate virtual egging.

The Brea Code
There are certain things in life that when you learn them, it changes everything (like how to peel a banana correctly). Learning the Bread Code is one of these. I haven't put this to the test yet, but it sounds feasible. I hate going to the grocery store, but now I have something to look forward to. The article says to find one on the same day you're at the store... the only problem is, what if it has been there for a week.

Wild Bald Eagles at 11 PM
I found this link on Neatorama and was pretty amazed by it. I'll just say that if Alaska was like that year round, I would love to live there. I couldn't stop watching this video because the eagles are pretty amazing. Unfortunately, half the year it's a pretty miserable place, despite its beauty.

Facebook Improves Self-Esteem
I think the Internet has pretty much turned into Facebook now for the average user. That's where you go to find out what you really care about, from what your friends ate, to your step grand-niece's 3rd cousin's new baby photos. Here is an article showing how Facebook Improves Self-Esteem. It's an interesting article, but it only provides a small explanation of why. I like to think that, you log in and say "Hey, look how many friends I have", but it may be that people are saying "wow, I'm doing much better than this friend who got hit by a milk truck just after his wife left him", making them feel much better about their own life. Now, go read up on Facebook and feel good about yourself for the weekend

Upgrade from Win 1.0 to Win 7 sequentially
This is a pretty amazing step by step of Windows Evolution. I always felt a little unclean upgrading as opposed to a "clean" install, but in the end, it's still the same. Left out of this video was Windows ME, which blue-screened during first boot (just kidding, I am curious why he left it out).

Global Warming Caused the Snow Storm

I'm not smart enough to have an educated opinion on the subject, but here's an article talking about how Global Warming Cause the big Snow Storm a few weeks ago. The article isn't all that interesting, I just thought it was a fun contradiction to popular belief. From my understanding the temperature outside is just anecdotal evidence, not proof against global warming (except maybe during the summer). Anyway, I still find it humorous to watch people who think they know about climates cringe when you mention something negative about global warming. Not that I'm against improving the environment, it's a great idea. In the end, if Scientists are wrong about global warming, we'll make the world cleaner, while conserving our natural resources for no reason. I'm just saying I don't care enough about the Science behind it to try and wrap my head around it, so I'll take the professional's word about it and jest at them when it gets super cold.
