Out With the Old Links 2009 New Year's Eve Special

If you're new to the blog, you may not know, but every New Year's Eve, I clean out all the links I have bookmarked, but not blogged about. This is stuff I've collected all year, and for some reason or another I didn't get around to reading or blogging about. I don't expect you to click on them all (I didn't), just if you find something that looks interesting, here it is. It's going to be a lot of links and the descriptions of the links are not going to be very good, but without further a due, I give you the links I didn't blog about in 2009:

A-Team/Star Wars Mashup

With the A-Team remake just around the corner, there has been a lot of A-Team stuff online. This video seems to be one of the better one's I've seen.

Hacked Stop Signs

Although, it's probably illegal to deface stop signs, that doesn't stop some of the work from being funny. Here is a link showing some really great hacked stop signs. We've all seen the "Stop Hammer Time" sign, but these go the extra mile.

Top 15 Tech Events of the Decade

I know this is anohter one of those annoying "___ of

Top 10 Obsolete Technologies to Kill

The actual article is called "Top 10 Obsolete Technologies to Kill in 2010", but I find that a little bit of wishful thinking. If there is a technology that really needs to die, it is the fax machine. I blog about this article for that simple fact. I was at my in-law's house for Christmas and saw a fax and thought "they keep that around just in case 1993 calls". The article also brings up a lot of other tech that should be on it's way out as well, but getting rid of the fax machine would make me happy enough.

Storm Trooper Inspired Art

It seems like one can make art out of just about anything, so why not stormtroopers. This link shows several art pieces/products designed with stormtroopers in mind. Stormtroopers are not only designed to protect the Empire from rebel invaders, but also make a fashion statement. On a related note (also mentioned a little in the above link) is the debut of Star Wars shoes by Adidas next month, which is a little weird... the Adidas link has quite a long drawn out into.

Monday, December 28, 2009

If you've spent much time around me, or even reading this blog, you probably know that I enjoy really silly humor and punny jokes. Among these is the joke "Two Drums and a Cymbal fall off a cliff... Bu-dump-ching". In this video, they manage to produce the proper sound.

Strangest Sports Stories of the Year

Here's another "___ of the Year" list for 2009. This one I found from reading this month's issue of Sport's Illustrated. It's 2009's Strangest Sports stories. Occasionally crazy things happen in sports and in sports news that needed reported on. It was good to take a look at some of these that happened over the past year.

Hitchhiker's Guide to Murder

Hitchhiking used to be a very popular way to get around, now it's a little dangerous for both. If you are a hitchhiker (murderer) or pick up hitchhikers (murderer) it appears this is a good way to make friends.

Laptop Positions to Avoid

Laptops are super convenient. You can do your Interweb (or watch movies, etc.) stuff practically anywhere, anytime. Truth is we (or at least I) spend way too much time in front of a computer screen. While we're there, it's important to stay comfortable. Here is a diagram of common laptop positions to avoid. Personally, I keep mine hooked up to a monitor and use it as a desktop except when I travel, but occasionally I will venture out with it. According to this diagram there really isn't an acceptable way to use a laptop.

MacGyver Cat

Usually I'm not a fan of these silly cat videos, but this one may be one of the better I've seen. It does help that it's to the MacGyver theme.

New York's Anti-Soda Campaign

It's probably no shock that soda isn't the best stuff in the world you can drink. As a country, America really does consume way too much soda. Here is an article about NYC's Anti-Soda Ad to help make the city more healthy. The video here is a little disturbing, but it gets the point across. Not only will you save calories, but a lot of (non fast-food) restaurants charge around $2.00 + for a soda, so you can save a lot of money, which everyone needs in this economy.

Octopus + Coconuts

A couple days ago I came across this article featuring a video of what an Octopus does with coconuts. The rest of the article goes on to talk about how smart octopi are, but the image of the octopus swimming holding a coconut is really priceless. Article isn't that great, but I enjoyed the video.

9 Holiday Characters from Around the World

For many people, Christmas is a special time, a time for family and tradition. It's amazing how Christmas (the holiday season) can be in other places. Here is a great article showing 9 Holiday Characters from Around the World. First of all, let me say, compared to some of these creatures, we have a very tame tradition. Some of these characters make the boogie man look like a pansy. Kids are sure not to sleep on Christmas Eve night in terror that these guys may sneak up on them. On this list, they did save the best (and weirdest) for last.

Blackberry + Google Helps in Baby Delivery

It's amazing how addicted we can get to smartphones. I now spend much less time in front of the computer when I'm not at work, because most things I need to do are on my phone. Actually, many items work better on the phone than on a computer. Here is a story of how a Dad used his Blackberry to help with Delivering His Baby. At least he thought to use it for this, instead of twittering "OMG, wife in labor, unsure what to do".

43 Facts about 44 Presidents

I know America is still kind of a young country, but we have had some interesting characters as president of this country. Here is a great article by Neatorama, featuring 43 Facts about 44 Presidents. I did know a few of these, but only a few. I really enjoy US history trivia information, so these were fun to read through.

Video Game Timeline

I've been playing video games for as long as I can remember. It's something that's not only enjoyable, but it helps pass the time, and once you get good will give you a small sense of accomplishment. It's amazing to see how far games have advanced in my lifetime. Here is a Video Game Timeline showing just how far games have progressed. Although I played a lot of Atari when I was very little, I would still consider me jumping on board during the "3rd Generation", and lost a little interest during the "6th Generation" (but I did play a lot of Everquest), but now I seem to be back into gaming again.

10 Christmas Party Tricks

If you're bored this Christmas and wish to show off some neat science tricks, this video may help out. Enjoy, now you can look clever at your party.

Bottled Water Infografic

The other day I came across the great infographic on the purchasing of bottled water. This is something I've tried to get away from, and it's amazing how big the market for it is. Seems like I've seen several shows/surveys showing that tap water wins in taste test (especially New York City tap water). Many of the items listed here were new to me.

Yet Another Triple Dog Dare Gone Wrong

Everyone know what you get when you mix, a cold pole, kids, and a triple dog dare.... someone's tongue stuck to a pole. At first it would seem there would be no danger in this, but it's highly advised not to try it for yourself. Here is a link to a story of a kid who did this recently... Tis the season! In a couple weeks, "A Christmas Story" will be on some channel near you and you can see the scene again for yourself.

Worlds Largest Food

Somewhere out there, is the "largest" of everything. When you find it, chances are it'll wow you. Here is a link to some of the largest foods in the world. You end up making course like this when you plant the magic beans and climb the stalk. It really ends up with some extreme eating, that's quite scary. I'm still not sure how they flipped that giant omelet.

Sketchy Santas

We all knew someone, perhaps even ourselves, who was afraid of Santa as a kid. My mother has a few pictures of my brother and I crying while sitting on Santa laps (sure it makes it less cute that I was 20 then). Here is a site dedicated to "Sketchy Santas". I must admit there are some really sketchy, unhappy, and perhaps inebriated looking Santas in this list. To not upset anyone, obviously none of these are the real Santa, he was in the North Pole at the time.

Thwarted Robber Returns Money

Here is a story of a life of crime turned around. A man attempted to rob a store with a baseball bat, was thwarted when the clerk pulled a 9mm on the robber. The clerk in turn, decided to trade evil for good and gave the man $40 and a loaf of bread. Here is an article telling the rest of the story of how the robber returned the money with interest. Now there is one less criminal out there.

Best and Strangest Police Cars

I remember as a kid growing up in Texas seeing the state roll out some Camaros as police cars. Other than the lack 4 doors to keep offenders, it made perfect sense. People go fast, you need cop cars to go faster. Here is a list of some of the best and strangest police cars. I have actually seen a lot of these weird cars (the SMART cars and such) in action as well as Chicago's finest on segways.

Some Card Art

I don't mean to blog about art so much, but it seems like I've been finding some impressive examples lately. Earlier today a friend sent me this link to a site with some art on cards. I'm not really sure of a better way to describe it, but they're definitely worth checking out. Links to this were posted on reddit and the cards sold out ($60 each) fairly quickly. It's a bit much for me to pay for it, but not too much to be appreciated and get a good laugh out of the cleverness.

Jimmy Fallon - Neil Young does Fresh Prince Song

This is probably the best Neil Young impression that I've seen, and although I'm not a huge Jimmy Fallon fan, I really loved this video.

Face Art

Here is a link to a collection of this guy's Amazing Face Art. He paints his face with something different daily. I can't imagine how much time and effort it takes to make each day Halloween like he does, but it makes for some impressive work. After doing some more looking, I found his official Face Painting Journal that has a lot more of his paintings. I haven't gone through all of them, but each one is impressive.

Rammstein vs. Cookie Monster

It's been a long time since I've listened to Rammstein, now that I think of it, it's been a long time since I've listened to Cookie Monster as well. Who knew Cookie Monster was German, but now it all seems to make sense.

Where Should I Eat

Deciding where to eat is a constant struggle in my household. Flowcharts help in just about every situation. Here are some really good flowcharts I came across that guide you in where and What to eat.
Fast Food
Chain Restaurants
Cereal
They're not exact, but they're entertaining.

Junk Art

You've heard it said "One Man's Junk is another Man's Treasure", but it's pretty neat when someone can take one man's junk and make the same man buy it back. Here is a collection of art that a guy makes from spare parts. Ya just gotta love how some of these creative people can think to remake junk like this into beauty.

The Secrets of a Waiter

I never have worked as a waiter, but I have worked in a few jobs that require direct interaction with the public, and that can sometimes require being nicer than you want to be. Here are 30 secrets from waiters that are pretty interesting. Some of these you can guess, such as "it's not always as homemade as you'd like". Or perhaps even "treat others as you would like to be treated". Maybe that one wasn't said directly, but sometimes we feel "above" waiters (waitresses) and not take into consideration their feelings.
